AP Lit: Soundtrack Project


Soundtrack Assignment
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Metamorphosis

1. Students will
a.    read a selected text
b.    take notes as they read 
c.    brainstorm songs to complement passages from text 
d.    compile a soundtrack for one of the novellas we have read 
e.    create a LP cover for their soundtrack
2.    The soundtrack will consist of:
a.    one “theme song” to represent the overall theme of the novella
b.    a total of ten (10) songs, the order of which matches the progression of the novella
c.    no more than one (1) acoustic or instrumental track which must match a specific tone or mood in the novella
d.    indecisive or particularly ambitious students may opt to cover both novellas with five songs for each, following all of the aforementioned criteria concerning choice of songs
3.    The soundtrack will:
a.    trace the plot development throughout the novella OR
b.    follow the development of either Utterson or Gregor throughout the novella OR
c.    reflect the attitude, personality traits, thoughts/ideas, etc. of multiple different characters from the novella
4.    The LP Cover will consist of:
a.    a typical cardboard LP sleeve cover 12.375 in (31.43 cm) square
b.    album art and title of the book on the front
c.    album art and a listing of the tracks on the back
d.    liner notes which will provide the lyrics to the songs you chose AND explain your rationale, track by track, for the connections between the songs and the novella AND your analysis of the meaning

6.    Finally, you must upload your song choices to the Collaborative Spotify List for open discussion.

- Clearly identifies why each song fits the theme, plot, or character traits due of the lyrics or tone of the tune.
- Reasoning for songs in playlists is clear and convincing using evidence to connect text and music.

- Reasoning is clear or  evident for some songs while some are still foggy.
- Shows some evidence to connect text and music.
- Little to no reasoning for choosing songs
- Little to no evidence to connect text and music
